How to Play Sudoku

Don't worry, no math is required. You only have two simple rules to follow: First, every horizontal row and every vertical column must contain the numbers 1 through 9 only one time each. That means if you see a 3 in a row, any open spaces remaining to be filled in that row cannot be a 3. Secondly, each of the nine bold boxes in the puzzle must also contain the numbers 1 through 9 only one time each.

Can you use logic to fill in the rest of the numbers?

Sudoku Solving Strategy

Solving a sudoku puzzle is all about the process of elimination. Scan rows and columns using the numbers already present to look for empty spaces in other parts of the puzzle that can only be filled by a single number. Each empty space can only contain one of nine digits, so if you can eliminate eight possibilities, the remaining number must go there!

Guessing isn't required (though on Sudoku Cat's evil puzzles, the logical strategies required are usually quite involved!), and there is only one solution to every puzzle. For a good overview of more complex sudoku solving strategies, check out Andrew Stuart's page.
